I apologize for neglecting the blog! I know you have been waiting anxiously... :) I guess its a good sign though, that I haven't been writing much, because i've been having way to much fun doing other stuff.
The trip to Italy and Greece was amazing. In Florence my friend Josh was an amazing host. He took us to so many beautiful places and we got to explore the Italian countryside. He also invited me to his house and I got to eat an authentic Italian dinner with his host mother, Gabriella, who couldn't be more different than Carmen! She was reserved and kind of formal, but very sweet and well dressed and kind. I liked her alot. She spoke a little English, and I tried to understand Italian and I could get most of it because it is very similar to Spanish.
I was staying in a hostel in Florence with my friends Hilary and Vanessa. With Josh and his roommate Nate we explored the whole city, and they showed us all the sights and even let us in on some local secrets. There is a "secret bakery" in Florence that is only open from the hours of 1am and 5am. It has no name and no storefront, in fact its hidden in this back alley and you can't even tell its there. Nate told us to be very quiet and just went into the back of this building, where we could see racks and racks of pastries. He spoke quickly to an old woman, paid her a few euros, and came out with hot, steaming, flaky chocolate and jam filled croissants! It was awesome. And we were a little drunk so it was like the perfect drunk food! Apparently not many people know about it, only people who have lived there awhile. I'm not exactly sure why its so secretive but hey the croissants were amazing so I guess it doesn't matter!
We don't have that kind of stuff in America!
Also one day they took us to this little sandwich shop where we got amazing sandwiches with the freshest mozzarella ever on focaccia bread and mmmmm... I wanna go back....
After Florence I went to Perugia, where my friend Kiki from Oberlin has been living for the past year. It was so beautiful. My whole time in Italy I was blessed with perfect weather, about 70 and sunny and breezy. Perfect. Kiki showed me all around Perugia, which is a really small city that actually feels more like a town. Everything is cobblestone streets and little shops and pretty fountains and statues. I got to meet her friends and I loved them all, especially Andrea who is fluent in Italian (of course) Spanish, English and is going to Japan to learn Japanese. Crazy. He was such a sweetie and Kiki showed me the best time. We just meandered around the streets, went to a park and walked along the trails, ate gelato and pizza and pasta, you know, the good stuff! The pace of life there was unlike anything I had ever experienced. No one walked fast or rushed or talked on cell phones even. Everyone just kind of chills out, sits in the sun, wanders. I have never felt so relaxed in my whole life. Perugia is definitely a place where I would like to return to someday, or even live (it's okay Mom I don't think it will be anytime soon). The center of town is on a big hill, so basically everywhere you go you are walking upwards and there are the most beautiful view of the entire Italian countryside. Everything was so green and lush, there were no skyscrapers or airports or cell phone towers. I could keep on describing it but I feel like words are really enough.
ok enough for now. next entry will be for greece! I love you all alot, and I'm coming home in less than 3 weeks! Scary and awesome at the same time. Besos y abrazos, me

so I think I'm getting to the point of this trip where I'm homesick and tired and annoyed. Fun! I think its due to stressful midterms, not seeing my friends here, missing my family and friends at home, rain....
I think my trip to Italy and Greece is just what I need, a change of scenery. I'm leaving on April 7th for Florence, where i'll be for a few days with my friend Josh, then to Perugia, a small town 2 hours away from Florence where my friend Kiki lives, then to Greece! I think I will also try to do Rome in a day trip.
I think another reason why I'm annoyed is my host brother. He is really starting to bother me. The hardest thing is the morning routine, let me paint you a little picture.
5am José gets up to get ready for work.
5:05 The coughing, hawking of loogies, and grunting begins.
I don't understand this hombre! He is perpetually ill. He has this loud, rattling cough that has persisted since day 1 of my trip to Spain. And this isn't just your usually little *cough cough* into your elbow. NO. José will tramp around the house, coughing as loud as possible, not covering his mouth, spreading his nasty germs into every room. Normally this wouldn't be a huge deal because I'm gone during the day and if i'm in my room I can put music on.
but 5am?? come on. He also will hawk loogies for 5 minutes straight without stopping. Its so disgusting that sometimes I feel nauseous while I'm lying in bed with the pillow over my head. He does this awful little routine in the bathroom, with the door open, which is directly next to my room. But the coughing and grunting he does all around the house.
So I wake up at 5am these days. The good thing is i'm going on vacation soon so I won't have to deal with it anymore. Also, after this month he will go back to working from 2pm-10pm so the morning cacophony won't last for the rest of my trip. Thank god!

i apologize for neglecting the blog! i have midterms now and the Spanish professors feel it necessary to make the tests as long and hard as possible...
i have been staying in alicante the past 2 weekends and its very nice. despite being a busy city there are some places to find peace and quiet if you look for it. last night i "botelloned" which is basically an outdoor party in a hidden place where young spaniards go. it was fun and i felt like i had discovered an underground...something. i dont know. whenever i spoke to spaniards it was in spanish, but they responded in english so we both could practice. we were actually at the castle, which is really big, and even though it seemed like we were making a ton of noise (there must have been more than a hundred people) from the street you never would have known anyone was there. it was a clear night and i found the big dipper. it feels good to know even though i am far from home we are all looking at the same stars.
i have just reached the half way mark of my time here. im not really sure how i feel about it. im trying not to think any further than tomorrow because time is going by so quickly and i dont want to miss out because im worrying about leaving! i am feeling pretty homesick at times though... nothing too bad i just miss my mom and dad and sister. also im tired of the food here... what i would give for a nice salad! the spaniards idea of salad is weird and often includes corn... i cant wait for food that isnt drenched in oil! although im sure when i go back to oberlin i will be missing wine with every meal and huge pastries and the strong coffee.
i hope you all are well and i send you un abrazo fuerte (a strong hug) and un beso (kiss)
amor, raquel

adventures
Mis chicas and I rented a car (against the advisement of our program, of course) and drove the 3 plus hour drive to Granada, a city south of Alicante. To make an incredibly long and hilarious story short:
-we got a flat tire.
-vanessa, my five foot 100 pound friend changed the tire all by herself.
-we then had to buy a new tire.
-the streets in spain are EXTREMELY thin.
-the last time our driver, hilary, drove a car.....she got in an accident.
-tapas (little bar snacks) in granada are free with the purchase of a drink!
-tapas are great, but when you are drunk.....pizza hut is the best.
-flamenco dancing is awesome.
-there are no words to describe the Alhambra.
-there are almost no words to describe how beautiful Granada is.
-the people in Granada are (in my experience so far) the nicest in all of Spain.
-my friends are hilarious and awesome
-i now know how to play flip cup and beat two Penn staters
-there are Golden Grahams in Spain!!!
the end.

soo things are moving along. my madre and i are getting more comfortable with eachother each day. we get along really well, except she talks very loud and very fast, and feels the need to lecture me constantly about things like wearing a jacket, eating enough, etc. i think she misses having kids to boss around. she lives a very quiet life, watching the news, sewing, reading, hanging out with grandkids. but once she gets talking she turns into this totally fiery opinionated spanish lady. but even if shes just talking about something very simple, like what we are having for dinner, she feels the need to emphasize every tiny detail and get all worked up about it, it stressed me out. she waits on her children hand and foot, literally. her daughter (who is 34, with 2 children) had a headache one day. so carmen, my madre, made her lunch and dinner and walked over to her apartment and delivered it to her. because of a headache! at age 34! crazy.
classes have begun, and im sad to say they are not any easier than oberlin. they are just as hard as oberlin except in a language i dont have full mastery of... excellent! but my teachers are cool and i have lots of friends in my classes. the weather has been beautiful, and i spent a weekend in murcia just wandering around in the sun and hanging out with the girls. we were supposed to go to granada but it didnt work out. turns out planning ahead is usually a good idea when traveling, but hey you live you learn.
i feel like i should explain about alicante a little. its a big city, full of all different types of people, lots of restaurants, and more tiny dogs than i have ever seen. its a safe city, i have never felt really nervous, but you still need to be careful. its sunny with lots of palm trees and right near the beach. the sunsets are really beautiful. the nightlife is insane. this is the weekend schedule for spanish kids my age:
friday 10 pm have dinner
12 pm go out and start drinking in the barrio, which is a section of clubs-bars
2am go to a discoteca
4am go to the puerta, a club-filled area right on the water which doesnt even open until 4
6 am go get some food
7am go home and sleep
saturday 4pm wake up
10pm dinner and the whole thing repeats
like i said, crazy.
my parents are coming this weekend! and after that, sevilla. gotta run, will write more later.
amor, raquel

im very upset with my host brother, jose right now. hes such a mess. hes almost 37 and still lives with carmen, mi madre. she cooks all his food, does all his laundry, and yesterday she spent the better part of the day organizing all of his bills, taxes, and everything. he got in a car accident the other day and *didnt have insurance* so the police had to impound his car and carmen got him out of it, somehow. and then at lunch today he was just treating her like shit, i dont exactly know what they were saying but he was being really mean to her. such a machisto attitude with a lot of men towards their mothers/sisters. i mean, this guy literally does nothing to contribute to the household and then feels like he can treat her poorly. also he told me to change the sex and the city documentary i was watching because "he doesnt like it" and that pissed me off too.
p.s. i just bought diet coke, spanish version of m and ms, and peanut butter. such an american. and im going out for pizza tonight with my friends!

it snowed here today! needless to say, i was not excited and slept right through it. but people here were freaking out, taking pictures and running around outside. most kids have never seen snow, and its pretty unheard of here. but thanks to global warming and all that, we have been having crazy weather. this morning it was sunny and beautiful, then it hailed, then it snowed, then it downpoured and thunderstormed. crazy.
i finally used skype tonight, and talked to my friend sarv. it was awesome! its completely free and works pretty well. just go to skype.com and download the program, then create a username and you can call me (it works through the computer). my user name is Rbenson8986. i am making skype dates with people to call every week, so if you want to talk on skype just email me and we can chat!
i have an oral presentation tomorrow, boo. and a test on friday that im not too excited about. i think im getting sick but ive been fighting it off, i refuse to be sick here because its just so inconvenient. i took a 2 hour nap today and drank a ton of water and ate 5 clementines (very common here) so hopefully i can stop the cold in its tracks. alright time to go learn about granada. some friends of mine are going this weekend, but i dont have the energy (they are leaving at 3am sat morning) and i dont want to risk getting sick. plus its cold there, colder than here, and id rather go when its nice and sunny. okay hasta luego, i miss you all. email me!

ok i managed to figure out the blog again. so ill update more regularly now. had a fantastic time last night, was my friends 21st birthday and we had a blast. its so fun being able to drink here, so worries about being carded and safety and security and cops etc. its just a very relaxed atmosphere, and no one gets like embarrassingly wasted. we went to a bunch of bars and then to the port, which has a bunch of great restaurants and bars right on the water. its so beautiful at night. been missing home a little bit this weekend, but this morning i turned on the tv and sex in the city was on, and in english! made my day. i didnt go to bed until 530am. but thats the thing- 530 is a normal time to go to bed on a weekend, early even. so people just stay up all night and then sleep all day. my host brother doesnt get up until 330pm on saturdays and sundays. kind of weird, but then again so is eating at dinner at 11pm. we had an ammmaaazing dinner last night, the best tapas ive ever had (meaning.....twice). but still. it was great. okay the smoke in this cafe is killin me. more later. love to you all

finally!
So I finally somehow figured out how to add more entries. It was kind of an accident, actually. Oh well. Right now things are great. I started classes today and I love my teacher already. Shes very pretty and patient and has a nice accent. Since I just realized I dont really feel like writing in full sentences, i'll write what I was thinking of as I walked home earlier.
I love how on my street theres a pet store and a little black puppy that I say hello to every morning.
I love how I have cute professors!
I love how my host mom, Carmen, is such a damn good cook.
I love how my host brother, Jose, loves everything rock and loves to say FUCCCKKK and give the rock sign with his hand (they are alot more casual about swearing here)
I love how the clothes here are so beautiful (and cheap...)
I love how I actually understand almost everything people here say (but talking is a different story...)
I love how its very breezy but the wind is never bitter and nasty like it is at home.
I love how I am stealing wireless right now!
I love how my Carmen, my host mom is a raging recycler who hates hate hates Victoria Beckham.
The end

I love how my host brother, Jose, loves everything rock and loves to say FUCCCKKK and give the rock sign with his hand (they are alot more casual about swearing here)
I love how the clothes here are so beautiful (and cheap...)
I love how I actually understand almost everything people here say (but talking is a different story...)
I love how its very breezy but the wind is never bitter and nasty like it is at home.
I love how I am stealing wireless right now!
I love how my Carmen, my host mom is a raging recycler who hates hate hates Victoria Beckham.

So...I'm leaving for the airport in half an hour! I think it has officially hit me that soon I'll be in another continent. Kind of nervous, kind of excited. (I think my mom might be even more nervous) I'm a little sad I'll be missing the season premiere of 24 and the Pats game, but I think this might be a little more important. Only a little, though. Okay, time to go. Wish me luck!

a few days left....
So, I'm leaving for Spain on Sunday at 6pm. I'll fly for 6 hours and get to London at 5:20, then off to Barcelona at 7:30. I'll get there at 10:30, then fly to Alicante at 12:30 and get there at 1:30! I hope nothing gets messed up. I'm surprisingly not nervous, but I'm sure I will be soon....more to come
